Standing on the threshold of the Lake District National Park, the Georgian town of Whitehaven is recognised as one of the 40 Gem Towns in England. The harbour dates from 1634 and has recently been redeveloped into one of Britain's best marinas with over 400 berths, and famous vessels, including tall sailing ships, and US Navy ships visit the port regularly. The nearby Westlakes Science and Technology Park hosts many national and international companies and is also the campus for 2 universities.
